Professor Paul Gilbert
Founder of Compassion Focused Therapy

Professor Gilbert is the head of the Mental Health Research Unit as well as Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Derby. He has a degree in Economics, Masters in Experimental Psychology, Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, and a diploma in Clinical Psychology awarded by the British Psychological Society. He was made a fellow of the British Psychological Society for contributions to psychological knowledge in 1993 and was president of the British Association for Cognitive and Behavioural Psychotherapy in 2003. Order of British Empire.

Objectives
By the end of the workshop participants will have:

  • An understanding of the evolutionary model, attachment mechanisms and three types of affect regulation systems that underpin CFT including the complexities and conflicts within the threat system processing
  • Insight into the CFT model of compassion which is based on two different psychologies:
    1) capacities for engagement with suffering and 2) abilities to alleviate it
  • Experience of mindful compassion/core CFT exercises that will include: soothing breathing rhythm and body focusing as well as development and use of the compassionate self and compassionate imagery to engage threat system processing.
