CMHA Ontario Board Member (Volunteer)

Application deadline: June 30, 2016

Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Ontario is a provincial association, committed to improving services and support for individuals with mental illnesses and to promoting mental health in Ontario.

The Board of Directors of CMHA Ontario is responsible for setting the strategic directions, establishing its strategic goals, oversight of the use of its resources in achieving those goals and establishing the organizational policies and practices that govern the organizations actions.

The CMHA, Ontario Board of Directors adopted as its governance approach what is often referred to as a results-based model. Under this model the Board is accountable for achievement of the strategic directions of the organization and for ensuring that its fiduciary “duty of care” is fully exercised. The Board does not intervene in the operations of the organization unless its policies have been violated or unusual circumstances occur. The Board establishes policies that prescribe the primary, “ends” of the corporation, including the mission, vision, values, strategic directions and strategic goals. It determines and monitors the organizational outcomes which will be measured to ensure that goals are achieved and risks minimized. It also establishes policies that place limitations (or prohibitions) on actions of the CEO which may contravene either outside laws/regulations or the accepted culture/values of the organization. The model provides for a clear separation of governance and management.

This is a challenging and rewarding volunteer opportunity.  The Board meets face to face in Toronto four times a year and monthly via teleconference.  There will be some committee work as well via teleconference.

We encourage candidates who will bring the diverse expertise required for the continued success of CMHA, Ontario.

We encourage applications from all individuals with relevant experience, including consumers and family members.
