Bill 13, The Accepting Schools Act receives Royal Assent

On June 19, Bill 13, An Act to amend the Education Act with respect to bullying and other matters, received Royal Assent. The bill, also known asThe Accepting Schools Act, recognizes the importance of safe, equitable and inclusive schools for all students, including LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans) students.

The Accepting Schools Act requires all school boards to take preventative measures against bullying, issue stronger consequences for bullying and support students to promote greater inclusiveness and understanding for all. The Bill also requires school boards and principals to allow students to establish gay-straight alliances to promote safe and inclusive learning environments for all, including LGBT students.
