A new program for campus mental health kicks off today.
Mood Walks for Campus Mental Health is a province-wide initiative that promotes physical activity in nature as a way to improve both physical and mental health. The program provides training and support for post-secondary institutions to launch educational hiking programs, connect with local resources, find volunteers, and explore nearby trails and green spaces.
More than 20 campuses are expected to attend a special retreat today hosted by CMHA Ontario in partnership with Ryerson University. The event serves as an opportunity for participating campuses to learn more about the program, as well as learn from those already experiencing the benefits of campus walks. Sessions include a presentation from Mood Routes, a Ryerson Student Affairs initiative which has been shown to reduce stress and improve mood for students by connecting them with nearby nature spots and greenspaces.

Mood Walks is led by the Canadian Mental Health Association, Ontario and has served specialized populations such as youth in transition and new Canadians. The program operates in partnership with Hike Ontario, Conservation Ontario, the Centre for Innovation in Campus Mental Health, and the Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants.
