Changing composition of Canadian families

October 4, 2012

According to Statistics Canada, Canadian families and living arrangements look different today than five years ago. Information from the 2011 Census reveals a number of trends:

  • Significant increase in the number of same-sex couples, with that figure nearly tripling between 2006 and 2011
  • Significant increase in the number of married same-sex couples, that figure also tripling over the past 5 years
  • Decrease in proportion of married couples, despite accounting for 2/3 of all families in Canada
  • Increase in the number of common-law and lone-parent families
