A recent webinar from Excellence through Quality Improvement Project (E-QIP) shared expertise on sustaining and spreading improvement efforts within healthcare organizations.
The webinar, hosted partnership with Health Quality Ontario (HQO), provided participants with insights, strategies and guiding principles that can be used to ensure improvement work is sustainable. HQO Quality Improvement (QI) Specialist Alice Strachan shared her expertise on the subject, and provided guidance to participants into what it takes to sustain improvements in health care services and programs. The “key ingredients” of sustainability were noted, including the role of a supportive management structure and building formal QI capacity building programs in organizations.
The webinar concluded with discussing how to spread quality improvement work to other parts of an organization or other health care settings that may benefit. This portion of the webinar emphasized the importance of adapting QI projects that have shown success when implementing in different environments. An improvement to a program or service may benefit other settings of health care, but a key in spreading good QI work is that spread often requires local customization.
