So much of our lives revolve around food. It comforts. It energizes. It brings people together. It is the key component of health. But what if access to good, nutritious food is difficult? What if the challenge of ensuring you and your family eat a well-balanced meal is an added stress to be faced every day? And when a mental plate is already full, the struggle to fill a belly with good food only saps coping capability.
That’s where FoodRescue.ca aims to make a difference to communities across Ontario. This innovative, online tool gives any not-for-profit organization access to recover good surplus food directly from local donors. Food businesses can offer unsold, perfectly edible food through this Canadian-made website at no cost. Donations are accepted from any type of food business – grocers, restaurants, cafes, bakers, butchers, growers, manufacturers – and are matched to registered food programs that help people in need.
FoodRescue.ca measures the impact made through food donations by calculating the number of meals that have been provided with rescued food, the dollar value given back locally, and the greenhouse gas emissions that are averted as a result. This information is free to share for all registered businesses and social service organizations to celebrate the positive outcomes of recovering surplus food.
Food is as precious as our mental well-being. Promote the idea of rescuing food to the businesses in your community, so that together, we can take one less concern from someone’s plate and fill it with good food, instead.
