Bill 140, Ontario’s Affordable Housing Act, 2010 passed third reading on April 19th, 2011 and is awaiting royal assent. This bill is the foundation of the Affordable Housing Strategy released by the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing earlier this year.
All of the government amendments were accepted by the Standing Committee on Social Justice including the provision giving the Ontario Housing Minister the right to approve the sale of any community housing unit. Many of the amendments made by community organizations were not accepted, including a further improvement on subsidy calculations, the addition of inclusionary zoning policies, the building of additional housing units, and the addition of a universal housing benefit.
