A new episode of Global News’ online Living in Colour series explores how issues of race can impact an individual’s mental well-being. Hosted by Farah Nasser and featuring guests that included Uppala Chandrasekera, Public Policy Director at CMHA Ontario, the episode focuses on experiences of racism by people of colour (PoC) and its impact on mental health.
During the episode, Chandrasekera offers viewers advice on how to overcome traumatic moments resulting from discrimination and its impact. The lack of understanding PoC may face within their community and how they cope within their own culture is also explored.
“The thing about these experiences [is] we all remember them, we can recall that first moment we experienced racism because it is so deeply personal and so deeply traumatic,” said Chandrasekera.
Living In Colour premiered on the Global News YouTube channel this month. The series explores how race and ethnicity shape the daily experience of PoCs, with the intention of starting a conversation within and outside of these communities.
