With more and more Canadians using social media regularly, there are increasing concerns about the links between excessive internet use and mental health and addictions-related issues. A new series by CMHA Ontario examines the risks and benefits of social media on mental health.
Part 1:
Addictions and Problematic Internet Use
The first paper in the series explores the evidence surrounding addictions and problematic internet use, with a particular focus on social networking sites. The paper also includes tips and resources to manage use and prevent harm.
Part 2:
3 ways to leverage social media for quality improvement of mental health and addictions services
The second paper in this series examines the opportunities for health service providers to leverage social media for quality improvement and enhance patient or client experience. Using social media, services providers can gather timely client feedback, provide client-centered options for support, and share positive – or negative – experiences across the community mental health and addiction sector.
