Toronto-based artist Aunty Social is using the release of her latest single Traveling Circus to raise mental health awareness and funds for CMHA Ontario.
Aunty Social, born Daniela Gitto, began raising funds for CMHA Ontario with the release of her previous single Trying. The 24-year-old’s music is inspired by her struggles with mental illness which included severe anxiety. Her stage name is inspired by a period of social isolation, brought on by her mental illness, during which she would use music as a therapeutic aid. Traveling Circus explores her struggle with social anxiety.
Aunty Social says she is very passionate about reaching others who may be experiencing something similar.
“The only way I could accurately depict social anxiety is by singing through a stream of consciousness,” she said. “I needed to show how illogical and self-hating these thoughts can be. This song is written for those who suffer silently, like myself.”
