Workshop presents the ups and downs of coping with inequality

October 6, 2011

A presentation kit developed by Vivian Labrie and produced in collaboration with the National Collaborating Centre for Healthy Public Policy, uses escalator metaphors to drive home the challenges in overcoming inequalities. Using examples such as “overcoming poverty is like trying to go up the down staircase,” the workshop kit offers opportunities for people to share their thoughts and experiences about the structural and social determinants that perpetuate inequalities.

The escalator metaphor illustrates the mixed messages inherent in our society, where efforts are made to help individuals “move up the steps” at the same time as other rules or policies send those same people “down the steps”.

The kit includes a facilitator’s guide, a poster template and slide presentations.
