According to Statistics Canada, Canadian families and living arrangements look different today than five years ago. Information from the 2011 Census reveals a number of trends:
- Significant increase in the number of same-sex couples, with that figure nearly tripling between 2006 and 2011
- Significant increase in the number of married same-sex couples, that figure also tripling over the past 5 years
- Decrease in proportion of married couples, despite accounting for 2/3 of all families in Canada
- Increase in the number of common-law and lone-parent families
