A Canadian Mental Health Association, Ontario Division branch welcomed three cabinet ministers and four local MPPs for a regional funding announcement this week.
The provincial government has committed $3 million to mental health and addictions services in York and South Simcoe for this year, health minister Christine Elliott announced alongside other local MPPs at CMHA York and South Simcoe’s location in Aurora Wednesday afternoon.
This new funding includes $123,915 for CMHA York and South Simcoe, which will help support clients who participate in early psychosis intervention, mental health court support and supportive housing programs.
“We applaud this government’s commitment to mental health and addictions, and we’re pleased to receive this additional funding for psychosis intervention, court support workers and supportive housing,” said CMHA York and South Simcoe CEO Rebecca Shields. “This will make a real difference in the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in York and South Simcoe.”
Elliott (Newmarket-Aurora) was accompanied by several local MPPs for the announcement, included Attorney General Caroline Mulroney (York-Simcoe), Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport Michael Tibollo (Vaughan-Woodbridge), Michael Parsa (Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill), Gila Martow (Thornhill), Daisy Wai (Richmond Hill) and Logan Kanapathi (Markham-Thornhill).
Investments in community-based mental health and addictions can ease issues related to hallway health care, a challenge that the entire health care system needs to tackle.
