CMHA BC and the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) launched Talk Today, a program to enhance the mental health of young athletes, on Tuesday, Oct. 6. The program pairs all 17 BCHL teams with a local CMHA branch in order to provide training, outreach and mental health and addictions support for players.
This is the second major hockey league to implement the program. In 2014, CMHA Ontario and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) partnered to launch Talk Today.
That year, more than 400 OHL players received safeTALK training, an accredited suicide alertness program that teaches individuals to recognize persons with thoughts of suicide and how to take action. All new players are being trained this season.
