On Wednesday, April 1, 2015, the popular CBC radio program, the Current, took a closer look at the role of the media and how journalists report on mental illness and mental health. The discussion focused on how the news media should report on incidents such as the Germanwings crash, and the perpetuation of negative stereotypes for common conditions such as depression.
Participants on the panel included:
- Andre Picard– a health reporter at The Globe and Mail who contributed to the creation of a guide for journalists called Mindset: Reporting on Mental Health.
- Kelly McBride– a media ethics expert at The Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida.
- Paul Garfinkel – a professor of psychiatry at the University of Toronto, and founding CEO of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto.
