A radio host dedicated to promoting wellness among his listeners and an organization that has provided pro-bono services to spread news about the positive work of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) have been honoured with this year’s CMHA Ontario media awards.
Ted Michaels is an incredible CMHA supporter, mental health advocate and person. He is host of the award-winning “Wellness Wednesdays” program on AM 900 CHML, and the recipient of the CMHA Provincial Media Award. On his weekly show, which airs in Hamilton and surrounding areas, Michaels welcomes guests who offer a number of perspectives on mental health, including people with lived experience, mental health clinicians and community advocates.
A shining example of Michael’s passion was witnessed across Ontario during CMHA’s Mental Health Week in May 2014. He collaborated closely with CMHA Ontario on a “Shine Green” campaign that encouraged the illumination of landmarks and buildings in the Hamilton, Halton and Niagara regions to show support for mental health awareness and stigma reduction. His efforts made the entire provincewide “Shine Green” campaign a success.

The CMHA Local Media Award winner is The Weather Network. The Weather Network has been a key sponsor of Ride Don’t Hide in the Greater Toronto Area for three years, providing coverage of the fundraiser for the benefit of CMHA branches.
The company also produces videos free of charge for CMHA Toronto to showcase the branch’s work. Videos have included promotion of its supportive employment program, 60th anniversary, and Housing First program.
For five years, the station has also been providing funding for 10 rent supplements for the branch’s supportive housing program.
Director of programming Peter Bozinov and on-air personality Michelle MacKey, accepted the award on behalf of The Weather Network, expressing their gratitude for the work of CMHA and committing to future collaboration.
