Syrian refugees arriving in Canada are at substantially higher risk than the general population for poor mental health due to their exposure to trauma, torture and violence. That’s why the Canadian Mental Health Association has introduced a number of initiatives to help ensure that refugees receive the mental health support they need.
CMHA Durham Region will be working with sponsors, settlement associations and community groups to help them support the mental health needs of Syrian refugees arriving in Durham.
CMHA Durham Region will be working with sponsors, settlement associations and community groups to help them support the mental health needs of Syrian refugees arriving in Durham. The branch will provide Mental Health First Aid courses to support workers in order to help them recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health problems and provide initial help. Durham Region News recently covered the community initiative.
For workers outside of Durham region, CMHA Ontario has developed a free webinar series in order to support the community mental health sector in responding to the needs of Syrian and other refugee populations. Each webinar is designed to provide people and organizations in our community mental health sector with information, tools and resources that can inform our work with marginalized populations. For more information and to register for the series, visit the event webpage.
