The Among Friends Initiative has released a resource booklet for LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer, questioning, intersex, two-spirited, allies and more) newcomer communities. Among Friends is a collaboration between Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services, CultureLink, and the 519 Church Street Community Centre, with funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. It aims to improve access to services by providing resources, volunteer opportunities and support to service providers and LGBTQ+ newcomer communities.
The “You are Among Friends” booklet is a collection of stories, experiences, resources and information shared by members of the LGBTQ+ newcomer communities. Highlighted are various issues relevant to LGBTQ+ newcomer communities, including accessing services, settlement, racism, language barriers, transphobia, volunteerism, mental health, community development, and social engagement.
