A new report from the Toronto Star in partnership with the Ryerson School of Journalism suggests a growing mental health crisis among young people across Canada.
The report indicates more than 5,800 Canadian children and youth have died by suicide in the past 13 years, some as young as eight years old.
Despite government acknowledgement and response in more funding and mental health programs over the past two decades, the crisis has not abated. Suicide continues to be the second leading cause of death for young people.
The study suggests, bullying, depression and exposure to self harm on digital media are among the most prevalent underlying factors of youth suicide.
The report also states the greater need for counselling and therapy for moderate mental health issues as well as specialized mental health services for those who are suicidal and may require intensive treatment.
