While parenting can be a challenge on the best of days, being a parent to a child struggling with mental health, neurodevelopmental, or behavioural issues can seem overwhelming at times. To help, on March 25, 2015, award-winning author and journalist Ann Douglas will share Strengthened by the Storm, a presentation of strategies for parents of children struggling with mental health and behavioural challenges. The presentation is based on Douglas’ forthcoming book on this topic, which compiles advice from interviews with more than 50 parents who have experienced the challenge of raising a child with mental health, neurodevelopmental or behavioural issues. Topics to be discussed include self-care, self-compassion, creating your own support network, and lifestyle matters (e.g. nutrition, fitness, sleep, stress management, and making time for fun).
Douglas’ presentation is part of a series of seminars presented by the Hincks-Dellcrest Centre Gail Appel Institute and the Young People’s Theatre that offers practical skills to promote children’s well-being and improve the lives of families.
